It is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of 8.0, while a 0.1 mol/L solution has a pH of 7.8. In contrast, it is insoluble in alcohol and dimethyl ketone.

Upon exposure to air, it gradually loses approximately 8% of its ammonia content and transforms into ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. Furthermore, it can undergo a reaction with ammonia water to yield triammonium phosphate.
